A-G Poster

Artist Statement

I created this poster using the brush tool, gradient tool, and text tool.  I made the chalkboard background using a tutorial here.  For the base of the chalkboard background I created a medium to dark green gradient using the gradient tool.  To make it look more realistic, I roughened up the edges using a grunge brush pack and added some faint eraser and wear marks using a soft brush.  I then used Eraser font for the text.  I added some noise to the font to make it look more like chalk on a chalkboard.

One of the main principles of design I used was for this poster was texture.  I made sure there was a lot of texture variety in the background.  I also made sure to add noise to the text to make it blend better and look more realistic.

I am happy with the way this poster came out, but I don’t think it was a very original idea.  It was hard to think of any other idea for the A-G theme.

For this poster I used the brush with some water brushes that I downloaded to make it look like water was rushing out of the door.  I used a soft brush to add some blue to make the water look more realistic.  I also used the lasso tool to trace the door and filled it with a dark grey to make it seem like there was no door.  I used the brush tool to add a little bit of shadow inside the doorway to make it more believable.  I added the text, with some grain and transparency to add a little bit of texture.  Finally, I adjusted the levels of the photo and added some grain to make it all blend together and give it some texture.

I used texture from the principles of art and design by adding grain to my text and photo and by making the text slightly transparent.  It is not the most complex way to add texture, but it is better than just plain black text in front of a photo.  I also used the rule of thirds when cropping my poster.

I am pretty satisfied with the overall look of my poster.  I am proud of the idea as it is original and clever.  If I were to do it over, however, I would like to put some effort towards shadowing to make the image more believable.  I would also like to add a better texture than just noise, and work on finding better text.

Quote Poster

For this poster, I used paths of the Apple logo to fit the Steve Job’s quote into it.  I cycled through fonts and chose the one that fit into the apple the best, resized it, and used tracking, leading, and kerning to make it fit better.  I added a white to grey gradient for the background and made the text more of a grey color to make it more subtle.

One principle of design I used for this poster was dominance.  The quote is the only main element in the poster and shows dominance with its size and positioning.  I also used repetition by keeping the colors on the grey side.

Looking back, I am not very pleased with the way this poster turned out.  Although it sort of goes with the apple theme, it really doesn’t have much to do with the quote.  If I were to redo the poster, I would add some sort of texture to the background and text.  I would also spend more time looking for a better font.

First Semester Reflection

My overall experience in the Maclab this semester was a positive one.  I enjoyed how the overall pace of the semester was slower than that of new media, allowing us to dive deeper into some of the programs and learn more of the features of those programs.  I think my favorite thing this year was logo design.  During freshman year, I was sort of confused about what a professional logo was supposed to look like.  They came out horrible.  This year, however, I was able to learn more tips and tricks that would improve my logos.  With these new skills, creating logos was a much more satisfying experience.  Although I would like an A in the class, I don’t thing I deserve one.  My projects showed improvements from freshmen year, but I was late to class almost every day and never made up my time.  Also, many of my projects were late.  I think I deserve a B, but definitely not an A.
