Typographic Poster

Getting Started

You must use grids in your design. Grids help to ensure a clean consistent layout with proper alignment. Create a Grid Action in Illustrator.

Classic Typeface Poster

Research the history and visual characteristics of a chosen typeface. Choose a typeface from the list provided. Write a minimum 150 word description of the typeface that focuses on:

  1. The historical background of the typeface.
  2. A very brief biography of the typeface designer.

Font List

  1. Baskerville
  2. Didot
  3. Futura
  4. Garamond
  5. Georgia
  6. Gil Sans
  7. Helvetica
  8. Helvetica Neue
  9. Optima
  10. Palatino

Requirements

  1. This poster must contain text only. All graphic forms must be created using type.
  2. Design using a grid.
  3. A complete font must be present along with the entire alphabet.
  4. Monochromatic Color Scheme (may use grey, black, and white also).
  5. Research the samples on the Inspiration page.
  6. If you have elements extending outside of the artboard, use the crop tool (Shift + O). Click and drag a rectangle around the artboard and adjust as needed. Hit return twice to crop. Save. The stuff outside the artboard will still show, but will not when saved.
  7. Open Photoshop. File —> Open to open your poster directly into Photoshop.
  8. To Save for Web: image –> image size –> change resolution from 360 to 72. Then File —> Save for Web and Devices as a jpeg to your portfolio/images folder.
  9. Next, save a thumbnail: Image –> Image Size –> max width = 900 px or max height = 600 px. Then File –> Save for Web and Devices as jpeg to portfolio/images.
  10. When closing Photoshop DO NOT SAVE.

Elements and Principles of Design Poster

Choose one of the elements or principles of design. Design a poster that shows the concept visually. Use only text and vector objects: shapes, pen tool, symbols, etc. (no pictures).

Requirements

  1. Remember to start with a grid. If you did it right the first time all you need to do is shift + F1.
